Geelong College – Teller of Stories & New School Anthem Sic itur ad Astra

Sesquicentenary Song Cycle

Paul was invited in 2011 as composer in residence to compose a 3 part sesquicentenary song cycle inspired by the schools long history in the city of Geelong. The piece would evolve from enriching experiences shared with Paul, students, staff and special guests, in a journey unravelling stories of Geelong’s history, from the Indigenous Wathaurong custodianship, the path of the Barwon River, the lucrative wool industry of the 19th Century to the growth of the town as it is today. Students went on a fascinating journey that would connect them to the deeper meaning of their own community and landscape. The resulting song cycle was performed to a sell-out crowd at the Costa Hall and inspired everyone involved with a new appreciation of their town.

You are welcome to view the synopsis of the project on the PDF file below.

School Anthem

After the success of the 2011 song cycle, Paul was invited back to compose a new school anthem. His process included working closely with archives, historians, alumni and interested teachers. The final work ‘Sic Itur Ad Astra’ is loved by all and has become an important part of school life. It is a piece which inspires the students to reach beyond their dreams.

We hope you enjoy the lyrics below. This is a good example of how Paul likes to honour the history of a place by poetry that connects us today and for tomorrow.
